Who is Snuffle for?

It's for anyone in business, education or the community who is interested in exploring new ways of working and living in the network society. It's also very useful for anyone who occasionally would like a bit of help with technical questions, locating online resources, or just finding out what's going on online around South Yorkshire and the rest of the region.

A number of our members are quite technically proficient (but hopefully not too 'geeky'), but Snuffle attracts people from all backgrounds: people in further and higher education, business support, solicitors, charities, arts organisations, web design - and just gregarious individuals!

How do you join?

Joining Snuffle is FREE and is linked to membership of the Network Users' Forum. You just have to fill out the online application form to become a member of the Forum, and agree to its consitution.

What is it for?

Snuffle is intended to be used to:

  1. enable subscribers to ask intelligent questions related to use of networks - and get intelligent replies!
  2. keep subscribers up to date with Network Users' Forum events and activities, and invite feedback on these
  3. inform subscribers of other events and services that are likely to be relevant to them (please check our commercial policy before doing this)

Please remember: intelligent questions are the lifeblood of discussion - more so than showing off expert knowledge - so please keep them coming!

How many email messages would I get if I joined Snuffle?

Snuffle has been quite an active and busy mailing list for some time. The average number of messages it carries per month is just under 100, though this fluctuates (up and down) a fair bit from month to month.

Why is it called Snuf-l / Snuffle?

Snuffle takes its name from two accidents of history: firstly that the Network Users' Forum was originally launched as the Sheffield Network Users' Forum (hence snuf) in 1995; secondly, that the list started in 1995 using software called 'listserv', that required us to put an -l at the end of the address - hence the address for mailings was snuf-l. And then snuf-l had to be pronounced - so it was called Snuffle. All very straightforward really.

Am I allowed to promote my business via Snuffle?

Yes, within reason. The Network Users' Forum is based on a belief that both "for-profit" and "not-for-profit" enterprises can have a constructive role in the development of on-line activity. Information about new products, services, events and marketing surveys is permitted on snuffle, but is subject to careful scrutiny and review on a case-by-case basis. Snuffle has hitherto been free of overtly commercial and unsolicited messages. We want this to continue.

If any message sent to snuffle is considered to breach this character of the service, the sender will be notified immediately, and advised to send any similar messages to the list owner, David Jennings. Thereafter the policy is "two strikes and you're out": a second overtly commercial and unsolicited message sent to snuffle will lead to the sender being permanently barred from sending further messages.

Are there any other 'rules'?

Just a few:

  1. Please do not send attached files to the list: some people's software may not be able to cope with attachments and decoding, and they may not have the same version software as you to enable them to read the files.
  2. If you want to share a file, there are two options
  3. Send messages to Snuffle in plain text. Avoid using HTML or Microsoft's email 'rich text format', as messages in these formats may get garbled when they are redistributed by the list software, and anyway some list members will not have email software that can read these formats
  4. To help us keep the list self-managing, please observe the "meta-discussion" rule: if you object to the nature of someone's post, take it up with them privately. If after a number of exchanges, you aren't able to resolve it, send the exchange to david@djassociates.com for moderation.

If you have more general questions about "netiquette" we recommend Arlene Rinaldi's guidelines, which are available on the Web at: http://www.fau.edu/netiquette/netiquette.html

Can I see the messages sent to Snuffle in the past (archives)?

Yes. You can read all messages sent to the list since May 1997 via the Snuffle web archive. This is also searchable.

The list messages have also been archived in other ways for parts of Snuffle's history - please enquire for further details if you're interested.

Email discussion lists are two-a-penny, aren't they?

Since Snuffle is free - like most lists - you could theoretically get an infinite number for a penny!

However, Snuffle has built a tradition over the three and half years it's been operating (as of January 1999) that it's hard to put a price on. Bad tempered messages are rare. Requests for help - even quite unusual ones - hardly ever go unanswered. Snuffle's spirit of mutual aid, and the informal way that it almost runs itself, are key values that the members hold dear - click here to see what some of them say about the benefits of Snuffle.
